Professor Carmel Borg

Professor Carmel Borg is a faculty member in the Department of Arts, Open Communities and Adult Education at the University of Malta. He is the founding editor of the Malta Review of Educational Research (MRER) and the Education Research Monograph Series (ERMS), and he also serves as associate editor for several international refereed journals in education.

A scholar in critical pedagogy, curriculum theory, and community education, Professor Borg has authored and co-edited numerous books, research reports, and peer-reviewed articles that critically examine the relationships between education, democracy, power, and social justice. His work is recognised for its strong ethical orientation and its sustained engagement with questions of inclusion, participation, and emancipatory practice in both formal and non-formal educational contexts.

Professor Borg has held honorary professorships at a number of universities and is a frequent keynote speaker at international conferences. Through his academic writing, editorial leadership, and public intellectual engagement, he has made a significant contribution—locally and internationally—to debates on inclusive education, critical scholarship, and socially just pedagogies.

In recognition of his sustained contribution to education and social justice, Professor Borg was awarded the National Order of Merit in December 2022. In 2024, he also received the Premju Ġustizzja Soċjali for his continued commitment to promoting equity, inclusion, and solidarity through education.
